Raise a Glass: The Carlton Club
In our second of many 'Raise a Glass' features, we take a look at one of Manchester’s most modest and yet important community hub spots - The Carlton Club.
Less than a ten-minute drive from the city centre and just a short ride on the tram, hidden amongst the striking Victorian-era dwellings in the charming suburb of Whalley Range, this long-standing non-religious nor political social club has been welcoming guests through its doors for way over a century.
A former gentleman's club, which served the rich patrons that once occupied the prospering area, back in the mid-1800s, The Carlton has now been repurposed to serve its local people and the thriving music, arts and culture scene that surrounds it.
It’s a destination for people of all ages, regardless of creed or colour, offering a diverse multitude of services, facilities and functions to all those who frequent its spacious grounds and even bigger interior.
On any given night, you could expect to find a number of local residents enjoying one of the fine beers on tap behind the bar (Manchester Union Lager being one of them, of course), enjoying a game of pool or darts whilst an eleven side game of football is being played on its ‘members only’ football pitch outside. Conversely, you could also be greeted by a horde of live music fans, packed in to watch a live band or DJ, or hundreds of passionate food and drink devotees, there to attend one of the mouthwatering gastronomic events which take place upon its grounds.
And it doesn’t end there. There’s an exhibition gallery, known as ‘The Green Room’, which showcases incredible art on behalf of rising talents from all over the Greater Manchester area. There’s a film screening room showing a diverse range of both modern and classic masterpieces. There are cabaret nights, art classes, jazz nights, spoken word evenings… The list goes on and on.
Not to be mislabelled, The Carlton Club is so much more than a glorified public house and anyone who’s ever been there will be quick to tell you so themselves.
Expecting to make a trip south of the city in the coming weeks? Perhaps you’re looking to step off the beaten track and find a new spot to hang? We highly recommend calling in at this marvellously versatile venue. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed.
