The Modernist Society was set up in 2009 to celebrate Modernist architecture and design. Initially just focussing on Manchester it has since expanded into other other cities. The publishing arm the modernist was established in 2011, initially publishing as a quarterly printed magazine. the modernist has now developed into a small press, publishing limited editions about 20th century architecture and design as well as evolving into a gallery and a shop in Manchester city centre.

They are very nice people so it didn’t take us long to say yes to a collaboration with them to celebrate their 10th anniversary. They also love an after work beer so please say hallo to Feierabendbier (pronounced Fire-arben-beer), that’s German for ‘I’m knocking off work’. This lager is traditionally brewed in communal breweries in the Oberpflaz area of north east Bavaria: a “Zoigl” beer. It’s an easy drinking 4.4% kellerbier; bright amber with a slight honey base, balanced with bags of hersbrucker hops bitterness and delivering slightly fruity and spiced notes.

They brought in friends and Manchester design legends, Trevor Johnson and Craig Johnson to design the can who took their cues from German modernist design, and the idea of that magical 5 o’clock moment.
